Council opens Public Consultation Process on Gorey Market House Re-Development

Wednesday, 14th February 2018

Wexford County Council’s plans to re-develop the historic Gorey Market House have taken a step forward today with the announcement that indicative plans and details of the re-development project have been placed on public display.
Details of the proposed extension and redevelopment, including indicative drawings, a written description of the project and related reports have been placed on public display at the Council’s Gorey Municipal District offices and also at the Council’s headquarters at County Hall Wexford. The details can also be accessed via the Council's “search planning applications” facility using the planning application reference LAC1712.
The views of the community were sought as part of a public consultation process carried out in June of last year and the submissions received, combined with the Council requirements for the building have been used to prepare the proposed outline design now on public display.
The former Council Chamber located on the 1st floor of the existing building will be protected and retained for Council and community use while a new extension to the rear of the building will create a multifunctional space, with capacity to serve as an exhibition/performance venue. The exciting and ambitious plans, which include café and retail facilities, provide the extended building with linkages to both Main Street and Market Square.
The overall objective of the project is the preservation and protection of the historic Gorey Market House through the provision of an economically viable arts, cultural and community facility, for the benefit of Gorey Town and surrounding district. The iconic building is an integral part of the fabric of the Main Street in Gorey, and has enjoyed a prominent place in the history, heritage and culture of the town since it was constructed in the early 18th century. The proposed project will restore the prominence of the Market House as a vibrant and thriving focal point on Gorey’s Main Street while also opening the building up to Market Square.
The public is invited to view the plans and particulars of the proposed development which will remain on public display at Wexford County Council offices in Gorey and Wexford until Tuesday 27 March 2018. The public can contribute to the proposals by making a written submission to Wexford County Council. All submissions must be considered and assessed by the Council before the project can proceed.
Latest date for receipt of written submissions is 5.00pm, Tuesday 10 April, 2018.
