Top Marks for Wexford Beaches and Marinas at National Awards
Wexford County Council awarded 9 Blue Flags including first Blue Flag for Carne Beach.
The high quality of Wexford beaches and marinas was recognised today at the 2018 Blue Flag and Green Coast Award ceremony, with the county’s beaches, marinas and designated bathing waters receiving a total of 9 Blue Flags and 8 Green Coast awards.
These awards are among the world’s most recognised eco-labels and are universally accepted as the mark of excellence for beaches and marinas. The Blue Flag award is presented to beaches and marinas which have excellent water quality and which achieve high standards across a wide range of other criteria including environmental education, management of the environment, safety and other services. The Green Coast Award is given to beaches which may be less developed and less populated than Blue Flag beaches but which nevertheless have excellent water quality.
Wexford County Council successfully retained all 6 Blue Flags awarded last year and in addition, received a first-time Blue Flag for the popular Carne Beach. The highly coveted Blue Flag award was also retained for the Council’s two excellent marinas at Kilmore Quay and New Ross.
Wexford County Council Director of Services, John Carley, congratulated all those involved in maintaining the county’s beaches to the exacting standards and ensuring these key resources continue to attract large visitor numbers to the county. He also praised the work of Coastcare Volunteer Groups, who play a very important role in achieving Green Coast status for Wexford’s beaches, stating that the Green Coast award “demonstrates the continuing dedication of the public to the improvement of their communities and surroundings”.
