World Leaders in Arts & Culture, Sport and Business honoured by County Council
The newly-opened Hatch Lab Innovation and Incubation Centre in Gorey County Wexford was the venue on Friday afternoon last 8 June for the announcement and honouring by Wexford County Council of the county’s newest “Wexford Ambassadors”.
These remarkable people with strong Wexford links have won widespread acclaim and respect as a result of their acknowledged national and international success in the world of Arts & Culture, Sport and Business. While enjoying busy and hugely successful careers these individuals continue to find time to “put on the Wexford jersey” and promote their home county at every opportunity that may arise.
There were seven recipients of the title “Wexford Ambassador” at this afternoon’s event.
Award-winning actor CHARLOTTE (CHARLIE) MURPHY from Enniscorthy was unable to attend the event due to her work commitments in London’s West End and was ably represented by her parents Pat and Brenda and sister Erin.
International rugby star TADHG FURLONG from Campile is currently on rugby duty in Australia and was also honoured. Tadhg was represented at the event by his father, James.
Five Wexford people from the international business world were also declared “Wexford Ambassadors” at this afternoon’s event and all were in attendance to accept the award. RYAN QUIGLEY is Vice President, Europe North | Immunology & HCV Lead, Western Europe & Canada for Abbvie, a company specialising in the creation of new medicines for chronic, serious health issues. DR DAVID DEMPSEY is Ireland Country Leader and Senior Vice President at Salesforce, the global leader in CRM and is based at the company’s Irish headquarters in Dublin. JAMES O’CONNOR is Managing Director of Microsoft’s Europe Middle-East and Asia (EMEA) Operations, headquartered in Dublin and is General Manager of Microsoft Business Operations International. MARK REDMOND is Chief Executive of the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland. The Chamber is the leading international business organisation in Ireland and represents the 700 US companies located there. EAMONN SINNOTT is Vice-President, Technology and Manufacturing Group at Intel Corporation and General Manager of Intel in Ireland.
All declared themselves proud and honoured to accept the role of Wexford Ambassador and spoke fondly and proudly of their Wexford connections, undertaking to do all within their power to promote their home county, whenever and wherever the opportunity arose.
Well-known TV personality Anne Doyle from Ferns, long-time Wexford Ambassador and staunch supporter of all things Wexford was MC for the afternoon. Anne paid tribute to her fellow Ambassadors and urged them to continue in their staunch support of the Ambassador Programme and County Wexford in general.
Speaking at the event, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor John Hegarty described the objective of the Wexford Ambassador Programme. “Wexford County Council wishes to recognise the extraordinary contribution of Wexford people to the national or international arenas of Arts, Culture, Sports or Business” said Councillor Hegarty. We also know that our Ambassadors will use the opportunities arising from their work to continue to speak positively about Wexford, promoting the county as the ideal place in which to live, visit or do business”.
Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright also paid tribute to Wexford’s Ambassadors. “These highly successful and respected “Wexfordians” provide examples of talent, entrepreneurship and unashamed pride of place that have the capacity to inspire and encourage a whole new generation of Wexford people to become leaders in their chosen field into the future” said Mr. Enright.
These newest Ambassadors will join with Wexford County Council in supporting all things Wexford and in promoting their beloved county at every available opportunity. In doing so they join their fellow Wexford Ambassadors Eoin Colfer, Colm Tóibín, and John Banville (Novelists) Anne Doyle and Dermot O’Leary (TV Presenters) Michael Londra, Singer and Musician together with Wexford’s sporting heroes Gordon D’Arcy, Kevin Doyle, Billy Walsh, Aidan O’Brien and Jim Bolger, who have supported the Wexford Ambassador Programme over many years.
