At the 2018 AGM of Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy Municipal District-based Councillor Keith Doyle (FF) was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Council, replacing out-going Cathaoirleach John Hegarty.
Cllr. Doyle is no stranger to political life, having served as a public representative for almost 25 years, including three terms as Cathaoirleach of the former Enniscorthy Town Council, before being elected to Wexford County Council in the 2009 Local Elections. In taking up the position of Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Doyle proudly follows in the footsteps of his father, the late Andy Doyle, who served as Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council from 1974 to 1975.
Speaking after his election, the new Cathaoirleach thanked his fellow Councillors for giving him the opportunity to serve as Cathaoirleach on their behalf and on behalf of the people of Wexford. Councillor Doyle joined with his fellow councillors in paying tribute to the out-going Cathaoirleach, Councillor John Hegarty, describing Councillor Hegarty as a proud and passionate public representative whose professionalism and dedication to the role of Cathaoirleach brought much honour and respect to himself, his family and his beloved county of Wexford.
In his address to the Council, the incoming Cathaoirleach identified a number of priorities that he wished to progress during the term of his chairmanship. He gave particular attention to the Council’s ambitious Economic and Community Investment Programme, which he described as essential to the future success and development of County Wexford and also promised to work towards the improvement of Wexford’s mental health services.
“I very much look forward to doing my part as Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council in helping to ensure these and many other exciting projects are brought forward and developed” said Councillor Doyle. “I will be relying on my fellow Councillors and the Council’s Executive to support me in these endeavours and I wish to say how deeply honoured and privileged I am to be given the opportunity to act as Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council. It is a challenge that I am very much looking forward to.”
Councillor Doyle will serve as the 121st Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council.
Today’s Annual General Meeting also saw the election of Councillor Willie Fitzharris (FG) to the position of Leas-Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council.
