Culture Night 2019: Friday 20th September
On Friday September 20th hundreds of thousands of people across the country will lose themselves in their imagination and an explosion of creativity as the country comes alive for Culture Night, Ireland’s annual nocturnal cultural extravaganza. Co. Wexford is delighted to be hosting free events across the County as part of the national celebration. The programme of activities in the County is now available on www.culturenight.ie/wexford or click here to download.
Each year Culture Night brings people together to create unique shared experiences and memories. All for FREE! Art, music, theatre, dance, and film are all on the programme for this year’s Wexford Culture Night with events taking place throughout the County. Highlights of events taking place in Co. Wexford include, the Norman Culture Night celebrations at Enniscorthy Castle which will include a singing workshop for families hosted by Aileen Lambert and a historical talk from artist/folklorist Michael Fortune, try a yoga taster session in the Market square graveyard in Gorey or watch local talent perform at the new Gorey Civic Square Pavilion, and in New Ross, Baya the Storyteller & friends will be closing events at the Green Door with an evening of spoken word, music, and storytelling.
Wexford town will once again come alive with free events happening on the streets and in venues across the town, including the National Opera House, The Creative Hub at the Bullring Mall, St. Iberius Church and all public libraries to name but a few. The Wexford Art Centre will be hosting Moving under Skies an intergenerational dance and music production and of course their annual Culture Night Cabaret celebrates local culture in all its forms. Try your hand at some Improv at the Bare Cheek Studios, listen to poetry at the Blue Egg Gallery or enjoy a family show courtesy of Red Moon Theatre at the Bullring. There’s something for everyone.
This year we are delighted to have Laura Way, director of Bodecii Film Production Company, on board as Co. Wexford’s Culture Night Ambassador. Laura was recently nominated for Best Single Episode at the British Soap Awards, and was one of four EastEnders episodes that won the BAFTA for Best Continuous Drama in 2019. ,
“At four years old in 1982, my parents, Michael and Irene Way introduced me to the magic of theatre and arts in Wexford Town as two of the founding members of the Wexford Theatre Workshop. Wexford has a thriving arts scene with talented artists, musicians, actors and writers but what I learned most from them is that Art and culture is inclusive not exclusive. It is for everyone. Culture Night is an opportunity to share, unite and celebrate all art forms, all artists and all cultures and I am honoured to have been invited to be this year’s culture night ambassador of Wexford”.
“Culture night had grown phenomenally throughout Wexford County over the last two years. Originally confined to Wexford town, Culture Night is now an important event in the annual calendar of Gorey, New Ross, and Enniscorthy Municipal Districts. The Arts Office looks forward to continuing to support Culture night’s growth countywide over the coming years. I urge you all to come out Friday 20th Sept for a free and entertaining night of art and culture”.
As ever Culture Night will be online and the culturally curious are encouraged to explore the website this year to plan their Culture Night adventures and routes in advance.
