Core Strategy and Settlement Strategy
The vision for the county in the existing Plan is:
“A county where people want to live, work and play, which offers high
quality sustainable employment opportunities and residential
developments, with high quality urban and rural environments supported
by excellent sustainable physical and social infrastructure, which values
its natural environment, built and cultural heritage and which offers
visitors a range of high quality experiences”.
Core Strategy
The Core Strategy is essentially the overall strategy for the proper planning and
sustainable development of the area. It will, amongst other things,
(a) Set out the vision for the county;
(b) Identify the Settlement Strategy and Settlement Hierarchy for the
county and allocate population targets for the towns, villages and
rural areas and objectives to achieve the strategy;
(c) Identify the quantum of residential zoned land required to deliver the
population allocations;
(d) Identify rural areas in the accordance with the Government’s
Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines;
(e) Ensure the Plan and the Housing Strategy are consistent with the
National Planning Framework and the Regional Spatial and
Economic Strategy; and
(f) Ensure the retail objectives in the Plan comply with the Retail
Planning Guidelines.
