Electric blanket

  • Check regularly for scorch marks or visual signs of damage.
  • Don’t fold but roll an electric blanket.
  • Never buy or use a second hand electric blanket
  • Don’t use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Never use a damaged electric blanket.
  • Switch off electric blankets when going to sleep and ensure they have thermostatic controls.

Laptop and phone charging

  • Batteries have been known to overheat
  • If a laptop vent is blocked by flammable material (bedclothes) the heat build-up can cause fire
  • Use devices on hard surfaces and don’t leave them charging overnight.
  • Use genuine chargers and charge on solid surfaces (not near upholstery or flammable objects).

In general

  • Keep floors clear in case you need to make an escape.
  • Do not place dressing table mirrors facing sunlight, sometimes they can magnify sunlight to cause fire.
  • Keep combustible items away from light bulbs or lamps.
