Smoke Alarms

  • A smoke alarm is a device that can detect smoke in your home and emit a loud noise to alert occupants
  • A smoke alarm can provide an early warning in the event of fire and provide time to escape
  • Smoke alarms are incredibly important when it comes to fire safety – as a minimum fit one for each floor in your home, somewhere central where you may need to escape through and where you should be able to hear the alarm (suggest hall and landing).
  • Fit smoke alarms in the middle of the ceiling, away from obstructions
  • Ideally a mains powered battery backed up domestic fire detection and alarm system should be installed.  This could  include interconnected smoke alarms in key areas including the attic and a heat alarm in the kitchen.
  • If you choose a mains powered fire alarm system, make sure it's installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Make sure any alarms you buy are marked with a European (CE) safety mark, which shows they are approved and safe.
  • When installing an alarm follow the instructions that came with it as the installation process may differ slightly depending on the alarm.
  • Do not use glue to fit your alarm, it can seep into the alarm, and stop it from working.
  • Try to choose smoke alarms with a 10 year or long-lasting sealed battery.
  • Smoke alarms should be tested once a week.
