Climate Action & Biodiversity Fortnight 2025

Wexford County Council’s Climate Action & Biodiversity Fortnight 2025 is about raising awareness on actions and measures we can all do at a personal and local level and to showcase some of the projects and initiatives underway across our County.

The fortnight serves as a platform to inspire action and drive positive change at local level. Attendance to the Climate Action & Biodiversity Fortnight events is free, with booking required for some events.

The following events, listed in date order, are scheduled to take place throughout Climate Action & Biodiversity Fortnight.

Monday, 12th May

Enniscorthy Climate Champions Competition Awards,

Astro Active Centre, Enniscorthy

This award ceremony recognises the winners of three award categories – community/voluntary, workplaces and schools – who over a two-week period in April strove to reduce their carbon footprint though simple, everyday climate actions. The overall winner will also be announced! (Restricted to participants).

Wednesday, 14th May

Land Art Making, Redmond Park, Wexford

Join Mayumi, a Wexford based artist, to create your own land art with natural materials found in the park. The event is part of  “Enchanted Ecology – Redmond Park Land Art Project”. All ages welcome.

Thursday, 15th May

Arthurstown Coastal Walk 

followed by an Underwater Biodiversity Photography Display 

by Ivan Donoghue

Join us on this scenic estuary trail through Dunbrody demesne which boasts stunning views as far as Hook Head and Creaden Head. The trail overlooks Passage East, Crooke and further down the river, Woodstown Strand. The walk will be followed by an underwater biodiversity photography display in the Kings Bay Inn. Light refreshments available afterwards.

Summer Plant Care Workshop, Enniscorthy Library

Join Marie Hirst of Unwinding with Plants for a summer gardening presentation and demonstration!

Learn how to look after your plants throughout the summer growing season. We’ll talk about what your plants need to thrive; correct deadheading and pruning techniques; learn which fertilisers and plant nutrients are best for growth, fruit and flowers and roots; and find out the best position in the garden for your plants. 

Marie is a member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture.

Foulksmills Family Fun Cycle

5km fun cycle starting and finishing in Foulksmills Park. Refreshments afterwards in the park. Registration essential for this free event as numbers are limited to ensure safety.

Bealtaine T-shirt Upcycling Workshop, Enniscorthy Library 

Join Textile Waste Artist Lynn Haughton for a fun series of workshops where we will explore ways to upcycle t-shirts! In the workshops, participants will learn how to turn 

t-shirts into yarn and how to then use that yarn using different techniques. T-shirts will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own old t-shirts to use if you like. Adult event only.

Celebrate Bike Week 2025 with a fun bicycle-themed story and craft session! 

Children will enjoy some fun stories about cycling and make a bike-themed craft to bring home. Parents and guardians are asked to remain with children during this event.

Cycle Right Training & Bike Maintenance Workshop, Wexford 

This free Cycle Right Training Session will aim to provide practical skills and safety training to promote competent and confident cyclists. The Cycle Right Training will be immediately followed by a Bike Maintenance Workshop. Learn how to look after your bike, keep it in tip-top condition and ensure your bike remains safe and reliable for the next time you hit the road!

South East Greenway Family Cycle, New Ross

Join us for a leisurely cycle on the Greenway! There will be two events on the day, both geared towards family enjoyment of the beautiful scenery of the South East Greenway. At 10am, a family 12km cycle will start and this will be followed at 10.15am by a shorter 6km cycle.

Biodiversity Farm Walk, The Poole Family Farm, Gorey  

Join Alan & Cheryl Poole at Rose Bridge Farm for a walk around their intensive dairy farm located just outside Gorey in North County Wexford. This farm is a place where the Poole Family implement their passion for biodiversity, striving to show that food production and biodiversity can co-exist. On the walk you will see a modern dairy farm set up, and also the management techniques and works being implemented on the farm to encourage nature to flourish. You will see the swift project incorporated into a cattle shed, and the special wall built in 2024 to give sand martins a permanent home. In the valley you’ll encounter the River Bann and hear about work being done to protect it.

Cargo Bike & E-Bike Street Demo, Wexford

 Find out all you need to know about e-bikes! WexBUG (Wexford Bike Users Group) and The Bike Shop will demonstrate Cargo bikes and e-bikes on Selskar Street, Wexford (at the Nicky Rackard statue).

Bicycle Basics, New Ross Library

 “Bicycle Basics” with Barrow Bikes offers you the chance to improve your knowledge with an introduction to Road Safety, Bicycle Maintenance and Bicycle Repair including common gear issues, chain fitting and how to deal with punctures.

Biodiversity & Geology Family Cycle at Hook Head

Join us for a 12km round-trip family cycle at Hook Head! Starting at Hookless Village, the cycle will stop outside Hook Lighthouse for a talk by Jim Hurley on the geology and natural features of the area. Then after some refreshments, we return back to Hookless Village. 

Time:           11am – 1pm

Date:            Sunday, 18th May 

Location:     Start & finish at entrance to Hookless Village.

Suitability:   All children must be at least 10 years of age. Maximum of two children to one                              supervising adult. Participants must use a roadworthy bicycle. Hi-viz & helmets must be                       worn.

Wildlife in your Garden with David Daly, New Ross Library 

To celebrate Biodiversity Week, New Ross Library is delighted to welcome renowned wildlife artist David Daly. David, a member of the ‘Society of Wildlife Artists’ (SWLA), will provide an illustrated talk on ‘Wildlife in your Garden’. He has also participated in ‘The Artists for Nature’ (ANF) projects in Poland, Extremadura Spain, Loire Valley France and Israel.

The Importance of Sustainable Lighting Design in Tackling Light Pollution, Gorey Library

Join us to learn more about preserving dark skies with Kerem Ali Asforoglu, an expert on light pollution which is a big issue for wildlife. Kerem was involved in the Mayo Dark Skies project in Wild Nephin, now a National park, and has also won awards for the sensitive lighting of Newport Church.

Thursday, 22nd May 

LAWPRO School Event, Davidstown, Enniscorthy

LAWPRO will hold an event with Wexford County Council Biodiversity Office and Davidstown National School exploring how our rivers and streams are vital habitats for wildlife and essential to a healthy environment. Children will get the opportunity to take part in kick sampling which will look at the invertebrates living in the river and how they can be indicators of water quality.

Bat Talk, Enniscorthy Library

Wexford Bat Group - The initiative came from Wexford farmer, Alan Poole who engaged with known acquaintances and local expertise to form the core team. Graeme Blyth and Kyle Kenny joined in support roles. The main mission of the group is to educate the Wexford community on the importance of our native bat species, to kill myths and generally to promote their protection. Through the activities we undertake to generate enthusiasm and understanding of the vital role the bats play in our natural world.

Office of Public Works (OPW) Bio Blitz, JFK Arboretum, New Ross

Calling all young budding naturalists, botanists and ecologists! The OPW invites families, nature lovers and curious explorers of all ages to its Bio Blitz at JFK Arboretum where they can join experts in their fields (literally!) for walks and workshops over a 24 hour period. No experience necessary, just bring your senses of curiosity and inner geographer! Suitable footwear and clothing advised.

Connections Festival with Tomhaggard Clean Coasts, Kilmore Quay 

There’s something for everyone at the Tomhaggard Clean Coasts Festival which celebrates the Joy of Living by the Sea. Feel free to participate in the wide range of   events taking place from exploring rock pools to trying your hand at snorkelling (restrictions apply) or visit any of the numerous stalls and exhibits including a traditional Lobsterpot Weavers Exhibit.
