This project involves collaboration between Southend Family Resource Centre and Wexford Library Service to record maritime stories of the Southend of Wexford Town.
The genesis of this project was a conversation at the Men’s Breakfast Morning in the Southend Family Resource Centre. Some of the men had been to sea, others had made a living from the sea, through fishing, and others were “lighters of lamps”. It was decided that these stories should be recorded so as to capture an aspect of the social heritage of the area.
A grant was provided by the Heritage Council of Ireland to fund a researcher. The result is twelve recordings of fifteen local people that give a unique insight into the maritime history of the area.
