Attic

  • The attic is a place where fire can go unnoticed until it’s too late. There can be lots of dry warm combustible items stored there combined with ignition sources including electrical wiring and chimney or stove flues.
  • An attic fire can grow quickly and be difficult to access and extinguish.  An attic fire can be catastrophic for your home and property.
  • Think about installing smoke or heat alarms in your attic.  Consider heat and dust in the attic before deciding which kind to install, talk to your electrician.
  • Ensure that the wall to your neighbours’ attic is properly built and sealed to help prevent the spread of smoke and fire.
  • Rodents in the attic can gnaw on electrical wires causing fire
  • You should be extra careful with electrics in the attic.  Electrical items such as air conditioning, air heating or solar units in the attic need to be properly installed per the manufacturer’s instructions by a competent installer. Things like old satellite booster boxes and other old electrical items in the attic can cause fire.
  • Regularly check chimney breasts or stove flues in the attic for excessive heat.
