A proposed Pedestrian & Cycling Scheme for Beechlawn & Clonard Avenue is being designed to improve road safety, enhance pedestrian connectivity and provide improved footpath and cycling infrastructure.
A public information session will take place on Thursday 6th November 2025 in County Hall, Carricklawn. Drop in any time between 3pm and 7pm. The proposed drawings will be on display and staff will be on hand to explain the design and answer any queries.
What route does the scheme take?
The scheme route will extend from the Hospital Junction onto Beechlawn, along Clonard Avenue and on to towards Whitemill Road.
What does the scheme entail?
The scheme will comprise formalisation of pedestrian linkages and the provision of cycling pedestrian infrastructure on one/both sides of the road. A number of pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures are also included.
Why has this route been chosen?
The scheme is approx. 1.7km in length and will connect with the Newtown Road Active Travel Scheme. This pedestrian and cycle route will form a spine across the west side of Wexford Town and provide linkages to a number of schools in the area. It will also serve one of the main residential areas in the town. There are a number of large retail units located to the southern side of the scheme.
What is the next stage in the process?
Designs for the Planning Permission Application (Part VIII process) will be finalised shortly. The planning permission process will include a public consultation period where submissions can be made by the public and any such submissions will be considered by Wexford County Council as part of the decision-making process.
When are works expected to commence?
The commencement of works is subject to receiving Part VIII planning permission. Securing planning permission will mean that the scheme is “shovel ready” and funding can then be drawn down from the National Transport Authority. Assuming that planning permission is received in 2026, it is expected that works could begin in early 2027.
